2 New Fisher Houses Open For Veteran Families In The Bronx

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — There are now 84 Fisher Houses around the world, with the opening of two new houses in the Bronx.

As WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reports, the houses provide shelter and comfort for the families of wounded and sick veterans. The two new 13,000-square-foot locations are on the grounds of the Bronx’s Department of Veteran Affair’s Hospital with 16 suites.

“It's going to offer families of hospitalized veterans a place to stay at no charge for as long as the hospital stay dictates,” said Ken Fisher, chairman and CEO of the Fisher House Foundation.

Jerry Oser, who was hospitalized at the VA in Albany, says the foundation does a lot of good. His twin brother, Paul, was housed at the location in the area.

“If I didn’t have him, I’m not sure I would have really made it. When the doctors call you, 'you need to get over there as soon as possible,' I was three minutes away. That, alone, takes so much stress out of your mind,” he said.

The homes can serve more than 11,000 families every year.

The dedication comes just days before Memorial Day and on the heels of Fleet Week.
