NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A New Jersey man is the ninth American to die under mysterious circumstances while vacationing in the Dominican Republic.

Joseph Allen, 55 and of Woodbridge, was found dead in his hotel room Thursday.

According to reports, family members said Allen was not feeling well and complained about feeling “hot” before returning to his hotel room. He was found dead the next morning.

A cause of death was not immediately released. There will be an autopsy.

Meanwhile, CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg says tourists should not cancel their trips or feel worried about visiting the country.

“When you take a look at the sheer number of people who visit the Dominican Republic, or Hawaii, or Puerto Rico, or any big the resort destination at any given year and then take a look at the number of incidents that are being reported, the odds are still overwhelmingly in your favor that this is not gonna be a problem for you,” he explained.

Greenberg suggests tourists ask about the chemicals used to clean and disinfect their rooms and make sure the mini-bars in their rooms haven’t been tampered with.
