New Report Shows Gateway Project A Low Priority For Trump

March 16, 2019 - 4:08 pm

ROCHELLE PARK, N.J. (WCBS 880) — Gateway Project officials had thought they’d addressed all the concerns from the Trump administration, bringing down the price tag and putting in more local money.

The administration, however, was unmoved, and in a report, downgraded the project to low-to-moderate priority.

This means the project still does not qualify for federal grants.

New train tunnels under the Hudson and the new Portal Bridge remain only partially funded.

The Federal Transit Administration says that the local money is still uncertain with none of it committed or budgeted and also says it’s not confident in New Jersey Transit’s ability to pay.

New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer said, about the decision, “I don't understand given that it's a key, we know, where we live it's a key artery of the national economy, how this is not of national importance.”

“Those of us in New Jersey who see what’s going on are scratching our heads,” he continued.

Senator Bob Menendez in a statement says President Trump is playing politics with a transportation ticking time bomb.
