NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- New York Cares has kicked off its 30th Annual Coat Drive.

Several racks of donated winter coats filled the gym at PS/MS 188 on the Lower East Side on Thursday.

Louis Figueroa was able to find a coat for herself and four for her children.

"The last couple of years we've been OK but this year we had kind of a rough spot with some family illness and some extra expenses so this kind of helped out a lot," she said.

Her 13-year-old daughter, Marilyn, received a stylish pink puffy coat which happened to be the nonprofit's 2 millionth coat donated in the past three decades.

"My mom got it for me, but she found the right one for me and it's actually really nice," she said.

Executive Director Gary Bagley hopes to collect and donate 130,000 coats in this season of giving.

"Each coat distributed today represents an opportunity to get to school, to arrive at a job interview or to tackle a long walk home," Bagley said. "The need is very real."

Gentley used, clean coats can be dropped off at every NYPD police precinct and hundreds of car dealerships. You can also donate by texting "COAT" to 41444.

Coats are being collected and distributed through Dec. 31.
