Beat The Heat At Public Pools, Cooling Centers

June 30, 2018 - 12:40 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Scorching temperatures have descended upon the tristate area and New York City will be opening cooling centers to help locals beat the heat.

“A great place for people to cool off is to go to our city pools,” Office of Emergency Management spokesman Jake Cooper told WCBS 880.

The pools located throughout the city will be extending hours to 8 p.m. for the duration of the season’s first heat wave.

It’s recommended that people stay indoors if they can, but those who can’t should take the necessary precautions to avoid sunburns and heat stroke.

A heat advisory is in effect for the weekend, but temperatures are expect to remain in the 90s until Independence Day.

Cooper recommends keeping air conditioners on 78 degrees and tells anyone heading outdoors to wear light, loose fitting clothing. He also recommends drinking plenty of water and keeping pets indoors.
