The Jets Plunge Back Into Chaos With the Sudden Firing of Their GM

May 15, 2019 - 12:06 pm

(WFAN) In a shocking development Wednesday, the New York Jets have fired general manager Mike Maccagnan.

The team has named coach Adam Gase as the interim GM.

In a statement, Jets Chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson said: "This morning, I informed Mike that he was being relieved of his duties as General Manager of the team, effective immediately. Mike helped to execute the strategic vision of the organization during the last four seasons and especially the past few months. However, I came to the decision to make a change after much thought and a careful assessment of what would be in the best long-term interests of the New York Jets. I will start a search for our new General Manager immediately. In the interim, Coach (Adam) Gase will be the acting General Manager. I would like to thank Mike for his time and efforts during his tenure, and I wish only the best for him and his wife Betty."

The timing of the firing is curious because the Jets elected to fire coach Todd Bowles while retaining Maccagnan after last season's 4-12 campaign. Then Maccagnan led the front office through last month's draft, in which the Jets held the third overall pick.

During the draft, reports surfaced that there had been friction between Maccagnan and Gase, although both denied it.

The Jets hired Maccagnan in January 2015. The team went 24-40 under his leadership and never reached the playoffs. After the Jets went 10-6 in his first season, Maccagnan was voted NFL Executive of the Year by the Pro Football Writers Association.
