New York Lawmaker Looks To Prevent Future Amazon-Like Deals

November 19, 2018 - 6:00 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — One local lawmaker is leading an effort to prevent anymore secret deals like the one negotiated by Amazon.

A week after Amazon announced the company would be moving to Queens, state Sen. Michael Gianaris is continuing to fight against the agreement, but not just because of the $3 billion in public subsidies that the company will be given.

“Amazon required the bidders to sign to secrecy agreement, so that they could talk about the negotiations or what was being proposed,” said Gianaris. “I believe, had we had known that along the way, the public outcry would have stopped this in its track before it got to the point it did.”

He believes private corporations shouldn't have the power to tell the government what information can be made public.

“That’s why I choose legislation, to prohibit these kinds of nondisclosure agreements in the future,” he said.

While Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio have called the deal a big win for New York, Sen. Gianaris said it’s time to rip up the agreement and start over.

Gianaris has been joined by City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer to call on the state to renegotiate the deal.

Recently, residents of Long Island City also held a massive protest against the agreement to bring Amazon’s second headquarters to New York.
