NY Legislation Would Outlaw Annoying Robocalls

ALBANY (WCBS 880) -- Pulling your hair out over robocalls? If you live in New York, it could be an annoyance of the past.

State Sen. Brad Hoylman told WCBS 880 he gets the irritating calls often.

"Just like most New Yorkers, I'm usually in the middle of something important like taking my kid to school or fixing dinner,” he said.

He, like so many others, has had enough.

“Help is on the way if we can pass this bill: The Robocall Prevention Act,” he said.

The bill bans robocalls going to phones in New York and helps authorities to prosecute the sources of those calls. The fine is $2,000 per a call.

“Our legislation gives the state attorney general enforcement powers to go after violators,” he said.

Hoylman wants the state to step in where the federal government has failed.

He says there were nearly 50 billion robocalls placed to consumers in 2018 alone and that we’re on track to shatter that record number this year.
