Local Priests On New List Of Jesuits Accused Of Abusing Minors

NEW JERSEY (WCBS 880) – The names of local Jesuit priests have shown up on a new list of Catholic clergymen accused of sexually abusing minors.

On Tuesday, the USA Northeast Province Jesuits released the list of 50 priests accused of abusing minors between 1950 and 1996.

Nine of the 10 priests from New Jersey on the list served for years at Saint Peter’s Prep, Saint Peter’s University or in Saint Peter’s Parish in Jersey City.

Several more priests were affiliated with prominent schools in New York: Xavier High School, Regis High School, Brooklyn Prep and Fordham Prep.

Mitchell Garabedian, who has represented hundreds of victims of priest sex abuse, says he has no reason to believe the list is complete.

“We just don’t know what criteria the Catholic Church uses or the Jesuits use, and victims are highly skeptical because of their long history of cover-up,” Garabedian said.

“At least on diocese has said that if the person has only been credibly accused once, then we’re not going to list the person,” he said.

Nevertheless, Garabedian says the list is a “small step in the right direction.”

Most of the dioceses in New Jersey have promised to release their own lists soon, and New York and New Jersey’s attorneys general set up a task force last year urging victims to come forward.
