Sweet Spot With Mike Sugerman: Meet New York's Pinball Wizard

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- New York’s pinball wizard has been crowned and now it’s off to Las Vegas to see if he has the nation’s fastest flipper finger.

Ever since he was a young boy, Alberto Santana played the silver ball. From SoHo down to Brighton Beach, he must have played them all.

“I’ve been playing pinball for a long time," said the 47-year-old Santana, the 2019 New York State Pinball Champion.

His crazy flipper finger beat 19 qualified challengers in the International Pinball Flipper Association sanctioned event.

Kris Liakos thought he could be the state table king, but it was not to be.

“It takes all of your senses at once. It's sight, sound, your hand-eye coordination. It’s a completely immersive experience and you can see everything that’s happening while it’s happening," Liakos said.

The event was held at the city's premier pinball venue -- the Sunshine Laundromat in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

“We are trying to take our Laundromat and turn it into a fun environment,” says owner Peter Rose.

Rose owns 200 pinball games, so he set up this speakeasy-type space that also became the only laundromat in the city that can serve alcohol.

Now Santana is off to Las Vegas for the nationals.
