NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A Newark police lieutenant is facing murder charges in connection to the shooting death of his estranged wife Sunday night in Morris County.

The Morris County prosecutor says Newark Police Lt. John Formisano, a 24-year-veteran of the force, allegedly gunned down his estranged wife, Christine, and shot and wounded another man, believed to be her boyfriend.

Neighbor Tom Verrone told CBS2, “She ran to the next door neighbor's house, but it was late, people are sleeping and she was, "please open the door!' and then she went to the next neighbor's house and he followed her right down to the house and shot her on the front porch.”

Formisano and his wife have two young children, who were home at the time of the shooting. They were not hurt.

Police arrested Formisano, 49, in Livingston, near his mother’s home.

They recovered a gun.

The Newark Police Department has suspended him.
