Newly Restored Rockaway Beach Reopens This Weekend

May 24, 2019 - 3:50 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – The city's eight public beaches, including the newly revamped Rockaway Beach in Queens, open Saturday as Memorial Day weekend kicks off the unofficial beginning of summer.

With sunny skies, 70-degree temps and steel drums playing, it already felt a lot like a summer day at Rockaway Beach on Friday.

Mitchell Silver, the commissioner of the Parks Department, says the beach is in great shape to start the summer months. An 11-block stretch that had been closed last year because of erosion is set to welcome beach goers this weekend.

“The best news of all is the entire 5.5 miles are open,” Silver said, adding that they’ve got lasting repairs planned over a series of years.

“We’re working with the Army Corps of Engineers for a long-term replenishment that’s putting in jetties along the beach,” Silver said. “Even securing the border walk with secure dunes.”

Charles Jacobs, the owner of Dredsurfer Grill, said he’s thrilled summer is finally here.

“We’re in the 70s for the full week,” he said. “My prayers have been answered!”
