FREEPORT, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- The 15-year-old girl behind the wheel of a sport-utility vehicle that crashed on the Meadowbrook State Parkway last week is now facing criminal charges.

New York State Police said Sunday that they have arrested Cindy Sanchez and charged her with second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.

New York State Police Maj. David Candelaria said a Chevrolet Trailblazer was headed south on the parkway south of Exit M9 in Freeport on Friday. Witnesses said the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, Candelaria said.

The driver lost control and the vehicle overturned several times before coming to rest on the shoulder in a marsh, Candelaria said.

There were 10 people in the car, Candelaria said. Three people were confirmed dead.

The dead were identified as Cindy’s brother David Sanchez, 13, as well as Herbert Leo Aviles Maravilla, 16, and Marlon Carbajal, 15.

The other occupants were identified as Diego Aviles Maravilla, 15; Mayela Flores, 15; Kevin Robles, 16; Lisbeth Menjivar, 16; Walter Ochoa, 17; and Gael Sanchez, 18 months. All suffered minor injuries, state police said.

Police said the baby was Cindy Sanchez’s daughter. All the victims are from Uniondale.

The vehicle had been reported stolen from Roosevelt, Long Island, Candelaria said. Police believe the driver was a 15-year-old girl.

The teens in the vehicle were from the Uniondale area, Candelaria said.

The vehicle has three rows of seats inside, but authorities said it does not fit 10 people safely, WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported Friday.

Cindy Sanchez will be arraigned on Monday in Nassau County Family Court.
