NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The body of a 19-year-old college student was dumped on a street in Queens just a block from his home and police are now looking for two possible suspects.

Authorities have released surveillance footage of a red Toyota Camry seen speeding away from the scene on 268th street where Nassau Community College business student Jay Patel was found unconscious and unresponsive around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Patel had told his family he was going to the gym an hour before his lifeless body was found lying next to the curb on the tree-lined street in Glen Oaks, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

Neighbor Lillian Rackoff watched as paramedics desperately tried to save Patel, who had been shot in the stomach.

But the teen could not be saved. He was pronounced dead at North Shore University Hospital.

Rackoff didn't know the Patel family, who live about a block away, but says her heart goes out to them.

"How could someone do something like that to another human being, you know?" she told CBS2. "To me he's a child. How could someone do that?"

"We all are speechless and shocked," said one woman, who lives across from where Patel's body was discovered.

One of Patel's family members said he had many friends and was loved by everyone, but a source tells the Daily News, Patel had a history of sealed arrests. Police would not confirm that report.

The motive for Patel's murder isn't clear.

Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said police are following up on a number of tips.

"At this point it's an active homicide investigation, a little too preliminary to look at motives," Shea said.

So far, no arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
