NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Officials say two workers were killed following the collapse of a deep trench at a Long Island construction site.

The men were working in the yard of an Upper Brookville home when they were buried alive, Nassau Police Detective Lieutenant Richard Lebrun said.

The victims were approximately 30 feet down when "at one point one of the walls of dirt and sand began to give away," added Lebrun.

Both men were covered in approximately 5 to 7 feet of wet dirt and sand.

Rescuers used shovels and bare hands to free one man, but it was too late.

Work continued Tuesday night in order to free the second victim at the tragic scene that occurred on Wolver Hollow Road near Pine Valley Road.
