SEAFORD, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A race will be held on Long Island Saturday to benefit those who have been affected by the Australian wildfires.

The Land Down Under 5K was scheduled in a bit of a rush, according to WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall, because organizers said they wanted the money to go to those in need in Australian as soon as possible.

They’ve reserved the Cedar Creek Park in Seaford for the race and 100% of the proceeds will go to help the residents of Australia.

“The animals that have been saved are now at Australia Zoo, in a big animal hospital, some of the money that is being collected here the Saturday is in fact going to Australia Zoo to help the recovery efforts and to help those animals that are in dire, dire distress,” says Bernadette Murphy.

Murphy, originally from Australia, is a representative for PR Timing, which helped organize the event.

She said Nassau County Parks employees didn’t hesitate in helping and granted a permit for the event right away.

Organizers hope to raise $40,000 to send to Australia.
