NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The head of the American Federation of Teachers speaks up after some parents sue New York State for the mandatory vaccinations of children in school.

The bottom line, says Randi Weingarten,  the president of the American Federation of Teachers, is that vaccinations protect other children from getting sick.

"And that's where one's rights are limited, if the wellbeing of others are affected," she said.

A federal judge has denied six parents's request to halt the state law that ended religious exemptions for student vaccinations in New York State.

The parents filed a lawsuit. They also say their children are disabled.

"We have to understand that we live in a community, and vaccinations are really vital," Weingarten says.
