NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The New York Mets have had a crazy few months, and it’s about it get crazier.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred announced last week that talks had ended with hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen to purchase a controlling share of the team from the families of Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz.

However, the New York Post reports former Yankee Alex Rodriguez might be stepping up to the place.

The paper notes A-Rod is “kicking the tires” on the idea of getting into an upcoming auction for the team and Cohen isn’t giving up his chances for purchasing either.

“[Rodriguez] genuinely loves the Mets,” a source told the Post. “He and J.Lo have talked about him buying a team ever since Jeter got the Marlins.”

According to the paper, A-Rod had been interesting in purchasing a team ever since Derek Jeter was part of a group that purchased the Miami Marlins.

“A-Rod’s net worth is reported to be in the neighborhood of $350 million, and J-Lo’s is thought to be closer to $400 million. Combined, the two could lay a strong foundation for a group bid,” the Post reports.

Rodriguez has not commented on the rumors, nor has Cohen – who had been hoping to become a majority owner of the Mets before the deal fell apart.

Fred and Jeff Wilpon have owned a majority stake in the club since 1986, buying the remaining 50 percent in 2002.
