NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- An alleged gang member appeared before a judge Thursday for what authorities say was a role in a plot to kill father and son mobsters who were reputed members of the Bonnano crime family.

As WCBS 880’s Mike Smeltz reported, prosecutors said a search of Bushawn Shelton’s East New York, Brooklyn home turned up loaded guns and $45,000 in cash—even though Shelton told the court he only had $500 to his name.

Shelton’s grandmother apparently told FBI agents that her grandson had recently came into that large wad of cash because of T-shirt sales. Prosecutors added that the cash infusion came around the time 71-year-old Bonnano crime family associate Sylvester Zottola was killed execution style while waiting for a coffee in a McDonald’s drive thru in the Bronx.

For about a year, both Sylvester and his son Salvatore have been hunted by men looking to kill them., with Sylvester being stabbed at his home and Salvatore getting shot several times getting out of his car this past July.

Prosecutors said Shelton hired a hitman to kill Salvatore, with the plan to lure out his father Sylvester so that they could kill him too. For now, Shelton faces two charges, including conspiracy to commit murder for hire.
