Attorney Probes Suicide Of 'Chicago' Broadway Castmember After Alleged Verbal Abuse

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The death of a longtime cast member of the Broadway show “Chicago” is drawing attention to what some might consider the ugly behind-the-scenes drama of the theatre world.

As WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported, Jeffrey Loeffelholz was despondent after being verbally abused at a rehearsal. Days later, he was dead.

His friends said it was harassment that led him to suicide.

“I’ve been retained to conduct an independent investigation into a number of matters arising from the death of Jeff Loeffelholz,” said attorney Judd Burstein.

Burstein said he has been hired by the producers of “Chicago.” But he will not share any interim findings, so as to maintain his own independence.

“I do not believe that I owe a fiduciary duty to anyone here other than the truth,” he said.

Others have suggested they too were mistreated. Burstein wants to find if this was a systemic problem.

There is no timetable for a conclusion.
