NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Yet another cyclist was struck and killed by a car in New York City on Sunday afternoon, when a biker in the Rockaways was hit.

Police say the cyclist, 60-year-old Bogdan Darmetko, was riding on the shoulder on Cross Bay Boulevard at about 2:30 p.m. when he made a left into the path of an S.U.V.

There was a bike lane on the street at East 4th Street, but it was chewed up as the city repaves the boulevard.

The 32-year-old driver remained at the scene.

Broad Channel resident Sloan Minor told CBS2 that speeding is a constant issue on Cross Bay Boulevard.

She said, “I don’t think there was any criminology involved in terms of the driver, but it does bring to light that yes, there needs to be action taken and there should be a stop light.”

Darmetko is the 25th cyclist to die in the city this year.

A number that has prompted the mayor to ramp up construction of hundreds of miles of new protected bike lanes.
