BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Brentwood, Long Island is mourning the loss of Evelyn Rodriguez, the mother of a 16-year-old girl killed by MS-13 gang members two years ago.

As WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reported, there are not one, but two memorials in Brentwood with flowers, balloons, and candles at Ray Court and Stahley Street.

One memorial is for homicide victim Kayla Cuevas, the other for her mother, Evelyn Rodriguez, who died on Friday.

“I’m feeling empty. I’m feeling hollow,” said Freddy Cuevas, Rodriguez’s partner of 32 years.

Right before a candlelight vigil was supposed to take place for Kayla, a woman in a sport-utility vehicle began taking down the memorial. Rodriguez confronted the woman, and soon after, Rodriguez was run over and killed.

“This is insane – for it to happen in the same location and on the anniversary of my daughter. That’s incredible, like, unheard of,” Freddy Cuevas said.

Police as of Monday were still investigating the incident.

Rodriguez fought hard to stop gang violence – even meeting with President Donald Trump.

“That’s what our fight was for from the beginning is about community; school district; kids in the future,” Freddy Cuevas said.
