NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams on Tuesday joined educators, parents, and others in calling for greater protections for students in New York City schools.

As WCBS 880’s Kelly Waldron reported, Adams said, “Children should be learning math, not massacre.”

“We cannot become desensitized to someone coming into a school, discharging a weapon, killing children,” Adams said.

He stood alongside representatives from charter schools, parochial schools, and others in calling for the passage of legislation that would provide equal funding for security guards in every school building in New York City.

“Enough of the countless number of people who are losing their lives,” Adams said. “Enough of the energy that states, ‘Well, it’s just another school shooting.”

Giovanni Santana, 12, attends Bed-Stuy New Beginnings charter school.

“Not having safety agents on guard is a problem, and if we don’t act, the death toll is only going to rise by a week or two,” Giovanni said.
