NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- New Yorkers celebrated Israel Sunday in a march down Fifth Avenue, as Israel itself celebrates 70 years since its founding.

As WCBS 880’s Mack Rosenberg reported, this year’s theme for the Celebrate Israel Parade was “70 and Sababa!” which means “awesome.”

Rosenberg ran into three members of Chabad Lubavitch of Crown Heights doing just that. Mendy, 14; another Mendy, 20; and Shmuly, also 20 have Jewish roots that run deep.

The older Mendy explained to Rosenberg how he and his friends are making sure that people don’t forget that.

"The Jewish ritual; the Jewish commandments that if we didn’t keep; have it, we wouldn’t have a Jewish identity today,” he said. “The fact that people are now assimilating and they’re now forgetting and not doing all these Jewish rituals and commandments is making them lose their Jewishness and forgetting about their Jewishness. And if we want to continue for another 3,000 years like we did till now, we’ve got to continue doing these commandments in order to stay out there and be alive.”

Thousands of people might agree, as they walked along Fifth Avenue in the annual parade between 57th and 74th streets.
