City Claims For-Profit Berkeley College Puts Student Loans Ahead Of Education

October 19, 2018 - 1:35 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- New York City is suing one of the largest for-profit colleges in the state.

As it is described in the complaint, Berkeley College is “more interested in generating lucrative student loans than actually providing an education.”

“People were actually many times saying, ‘I want to pay upfront,’ ‘I want to pay in cash,’ or, ‘My grandmother’s going to pay with her credit card,’” said Consumer Affairs Commissioner Lorelei Salas. “But people were getting entered into loans. There was a lot of deception going into these transactions.”

Salas said thousands of students were scammed out of tens of thousands of dollars.

“This is really concerning, and these are loans,” Salas said. “This is debt that people would carry for a long time.”

The lawsuit seeks restitution. A Berkeley representative said the college denies the allegations and will vigorously defend itself.
