City Outlines Plans For Borough-Based Jails To Replace Rikers Island

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A briefing was held at City Hall Wednesday on the new jails that will eventually replace Rikers Island – if and when it is shut down.

As WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reported, the de Blasio administration is marketing the coming borough-based jails as more humane, and safer for both inmates and correction officers.

In concept, they will feature sunlight, better sightlines, visitors’ centers, and even areas for community use and retail.

"And what the evidence is very strong about is that when you provide housing that feels more human; feels more like you would have in your very day life, how people behave; how they engage both with one another and the officers becomes very much destressed and creates a better environment," said city Criminal Justice Director Liz Glazer.

The city cannot yet say what the price tag will be for the new borough-based jails, but it projects they will be completed by 2027.
