Cuomo: N.Y. State Needs To Protect Abortion Rights For Women

July 09, 2018 - 5:01 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo is vowing to protect a women's right to choose, as he predicts Roe v. Wade will be overturned once a new justice gets sworn in to the U.S. Supreme Court.

As WCBS 880's Steve Burns reported, Cuomo spoke at a regular, taxpayer-funded event Monday. But at times, it almost seemed like a campaign rally.

“Are we ready to fight back?” he said. “Yeah! You know we are!”

Cuomo called on Republicans in the New York State Senate to return to Albany. He wants a woman's right to choose added to the state constitution.
“We have passed a New York version of Roe v. Wade,” he said. “We need a New York state law that codifies Roe v. Wade.”

The state Assembly passed the bill, but the Senate set it aside last session. The governor can order lawmakers back as he did last year, but he said doing that would not mean much.

“All a special session actually requires is they gavel in and they gavel out,” he said.

In the meantime, Cuomo is signing an executive order making sure women have access to emergency contraception regardless of insurance rules.
