Cuomo: Offshore Oil Drilling Would Be Disaster For New York Metro Area

August 10, 2018 - 1:52 pm

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday that allowing oil drilling off New York’s coast would be “an act of insanity.”

“The federal government has now proposed that they would open up New York waters to offshore drilling – as insane as that sounds,” Cuomo said. “Offshore drilling – because they’re still in the world of fossil fuels – offshore drilling has such potential dangers for the state.”

Cuomo is vowing to do all he can to fight any federal proposal to expand offshore drilling.

The governor fears an oil spill close to the city would be an absolute disaster.

“If we ever had offshore drilling off the coast of Long Island, and there was a spill, it would damage not just the southern shore of Long Island. That spill, with our tides, would go into the Long Island Sound, would go up the Hudson River as far as Poughkeepsie given the tides,” Cuomo said. “The entire metropolitan area would be stained by a spill on offshore drilling.”

The state cannot control federal waters, but it could prohibit the pipelines that would link drilling platforms to the New York mainland.
