De Blasio Draws Heat For Using NYPD Counterterrorism Plane

July 06, 2018 - 8:28 pm

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio drew criticism Friday for using the NYPD’s $3 million counterterrorism plane to travel from his vacation spot in Quebec to the street renaming ceremony for assassinated NYPD Detective Miosotis Familia, and then back to Quebec again.

De Blasio had initially gone to Quebec on a commercial jet.

He flew from Montreal to Westchester County Airport in the NYPD Cessna 208 caravan, according to the New York Daily News. Altogether, the plane was in the air for seven hours for the round trip, the Daily News reported.

City Hall spokesman Eric Phillips told the newspaper this was the first time the mayor had used the aircraft. It was the purchased in 2017, and is outfitted with radiation surveillance devices and other high-tech items, the newspaper reported.

Neither the NYPD nor the Mayor’s office would say in published reports who decided to use the plane, the cost of the trip, or why the mayor took the counterterrorism plane instead of a commercial flight.
