YONKERS, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- The next generation of bike sharing has come to Yonkers.

As WCBS 880’s Sean Adams reported, the LimeBike sharing service has no docking stations and allows users to park the bikes anywhere.

“The city is a little greener today, literally a little greener, and today Yonkers becomes the first city to officially put forth dockless bike share,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.

With the LimeBike bicycles, there are no clunky docking stations blocking the sidewalks or taking up parking spaces.

“Once you have the app on your phone, you scan the barcode, you ride to where you need to go, you leave the bike, park it responsibly and, lock with a super simple mechanism,” said LimeBike general manager Gil Kazimirov.

The cost is $1 per 30-minute ride.

LimeBike and Yonkers officials are not worried about theft, because the bikes have GPS that you can use to locate the nearest bike – just by clicking the app on a smartphone.
