NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Five doctors and two other medical professionals were among 10 people arrested Thursday, charged with illegally prescribing millions of oxycodone pills.

As WCBS 880’s Rich Lamb reported, federal prosecutors said Dr. Dante Cubangbang and nurse practitioner John Gargan prescribed more than 6 million oxycodone pills while operating a Queens medical clinic.

Meanwhile, Dr. Carl Anderson is accused of prescribing nearly 1 million oxycodone pills, including servicing a street drug dealer.

“Anderson had his office on Staten Island. He only saw patients in the middle of the night, prescribing opioids in the cover of darkness,” said U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Berman. “It was not uncommon for crowds of people to form outside his office at 3 or 4 in the morning, prompting 911 calls from his neighbors. Tragically, several of Dr. Anderson’s former patients overdosed and died, including two of his employees.”

Berman declared of the doctors and other medical professionals accused, “Instead of caring for their patients, they were drug dealers in white coats.”
