CORNWALL, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- An off-duty NYPD detective was attacked by a bear while working on his wife’s car in Orange County, officials said.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservations said it happened around 9:30 p.m. Sunday in Cornwall. The bear’s paw tore through Detective William Orange’ shirt and left four long scratches on his chest and abdomen.

A published report said Orange got a tetanus shot and was treated with antibiotics, and will return to work once he is cleared medically.

The DEC has set up a trap in Orange’s yard in case the bear comes back.
