NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — An off-duty police officer was able to thwart a thief who grabbed a tip jar from a Chelsea coffee shop on Friday.

Police say the incident began when the suspect entered Matto on Seventh Avenue to use the restroom and then swiped the tip jar on the way out.

Luckily, off-duty NYPD captain Arsenio Camilo was also inside the shop at the time and jumped into action.

He quickly grabbed onto the jar as the thief continued to struggle to get away, dragging the officer down the pavement.

The two fell to the ground, but eventually two accomplice helped pry the suspect from Camilo’s grasp.

Camilo was able to save the jar, though some money had been removed.

Police are now asking the public for help in identifying the suspects.
