Father Of Baby Found Dead In East River Ordered Held Without Bail

August 10, 2018 - 11:28 am

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The father of the dead baby found in the East River this past weekend is back in New York appeared in court Friday.

As WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported, James Currie shuffled into court wearing a white paper jumpsuit. He twice answered “yes” to questions from the judge and was then held without bail.

Currie, 37, has been charged with concealing a human corpse.

Police said Currie carried his dead 7-month-old son, Mason Saldana, around in a backpack before tossing him near the Brooklyn Bridge.

Prosecutors said Currie took three flights to three different parts of the world to escape.

He wasw tracked down in to Thailand, where he was denied entry upon arriving in Bangkok.

Currie was returned to New York on Thursday, police said.

Norman Williams is Currie’s attorney.

“Everybody needs to keep an open mind and not convict this man until there’s some evidence proving that he did something wrong,” Williams said.

When asked if Currie had explained to him what happened, Williams said, “In the 10 seconds that I was in the back, no.”

NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said earlier this week Mason’s mother filed domestic incident report on Sunday. The report indicated that she dropped the child off with the father and the child was not returned when expected.

Shea said the child’s 36-year-old mother called 911 to report that her son was not dropped off at daycare, but there was no mention of harm to the child. But she also said she had heard on the news about a child in the water and feared the worst, and she started crying.

“I don’t think anyone could listen to the call without their blood curdling,” Shea said.

Currie and the boy’s mother were not legally married and lived separately in the Bronx, Shea said.

Mason was spotted around 4 p.m. Sunday by a tourist from Oklahoma who tried to jump in to try to save him. But he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Currie has not been charged with the baby’s death. The government is waiting on autopsy results.
