Festival To Celebrate Flag Day With Giant Hot-Air Balloon

HOBOKEN, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- Thursday is Flag Day, and one group is marking it the only way they know how - with a giant balloon.

As WCBS 880's Steve Burns reported, the massive American flag balloon this year will be rising from a field at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken.

"This balloon is the largest free flying United States hot-air balloon in the world,” said Howard Freeman. “It is 72 feet wide, which is about seven stories. It's about six stories high; about 60 feet high."

Freeman runs the New Jersey Festival of Ballooning, set to happen in late July.

But he said every year: “What better way for us as a balloon festival to salute American Flag Day than to have the world’s biggest flying hot-air balloon tethered and out for everybody to see and appreciate?”

This week also marks 225 years since the first hot-air balloon flight in America.

The festival plans for the giant flag to be up from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday.
