NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The man called "the world's most overrated general" by President Donald Trump dished up some revenge at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner on Thursday.

Former Defense Secretary James Mattis, who served as the keynote speaker at the annual charity event in New York, had his moment a day after the president's alleged dig during a contentious White House meeting with Congress members.

"I'm not just an overrated general I am the greatest, the world's most overrated," Mattis said, adding that he's in good comapny since Trump once called Meryl Streep an "overrated actress."

"I guess I'm the Meryl Streep of generals," Mattis said, drawing laughs and applause.

The retired Marine, who alluded to disagreements with Trump when announcing his resignation as defense secretary last December, also joked that he earned his spurs on the battlefield while Trump earned his spurs in a letter from his doctor.
