NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A fundraiser for the National Rifle Association is set for next month on Long Island and at least one Democratic lawmaker is hoping the venue will cancel the event.

For a second year in a row, protesters are expected to be outside the Inn at New Hyde Park on Sept. 19 as the Nassau County Friends of the NRA holds a fundraiser.

During the event, guns will be raffling and auctioning off, says State Sen. Jim Gaughran.

"I support the Second Amendment, but we just passed the red flag law to try to make sure that it gets out of the hands of people who do not have the capacity to have guns and just to be raffling off guns as part of a program really sends the wrong message," Gaughran told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

He has written a letter to the catering facility asking them not to hold the fundraiser.

"Long Island has been so victimized by gun violence and it's not just the mass shootings, it's every day we are losing lives because guns are in the hands of the wrong people and just to glamorize it the way this organization is doing it at this event, this is not the right place," Gaughran said.

Calls to the NRA and the catering facility seeking comment were not returned.

Last year, the Nassau County Democratic Committee canceled a planned political fundraiser at the venue because of the NRA event.
