Gillibrand Calls For Retraining Services For Workers Who May Lose Jobs To Automation

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- There are concerns that the emergence of automation – the use of an automatic equipment system to perform a job now done by humans – could mean the loss of millions of jobs across the country.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York) is trying to make sure that does not happen.

As WCBS 880’s Mack Rosenberg reported, Gillibrand wants to expand trade adjustment assistance, which currently helps those who have been outsourced so it would include people who lose jobs to automation.

She said the existing system “just isn’t equipped to deal with automation, and workers who lose their jobs to automation deserve all the same opportunities to get back on their feet as workers whose jobs are shipped overseas.”

Gillibrand said 10 percent of jobs in New York City could be affected by automation technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence. Those jobs are mainly focused in manufacturing.
