BELVIDERE, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- A 17-year-old girl in New Jersey told police she was abducted, but now she has been charged with a crime herself after police concluded the claim was false.

The girl told police in Hackettstown Township that she was abducted by an unknown man on March 1 and released shortly afterward.

Police investigated over the course of the following week and reported that they spent “a significant amount of resources,” before determining that the allegation was false.

The Warren County Prosecutor’s office has now charged the girl with providing a false report to law enforcement, which amounts to a fourth-degree crime.

The girl was arrested Friday, and faces up to a year in a juvenile facility if convicted.
