NYPD: 9-Year-Old Girl Accidentally Set Herself On Fire In School

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — An elementary school student is in critical condition after she accidentally lit herself on fire inside her Brooklyn school.

Police say the 9-year-old girl was playing with a lighter inside the building and her clothing caught fire.

The incident happened at the Excellence Girls Charter School Elementary Academy in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The girl was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center and is said to have second and third-degree burns on her upper body.

In a statement, the school said it was working with authorities and focusing on supporting the 9-year-old student and her family.
