NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and other Republican leaders held a news conference Wendesday to lay out their two-year plan to revive New York City.

As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, Giuliani painted a dark dystopian picture of New York City, ripping Mayor Bill de Blasio, Black Lives Matter, Joe Biden and Democrats in general.

"The best thing you can do for the Democratic Party is to vote Republican, because it will force them, if they get soundly defeated, to go back, get rid of the maniacs, anti-American morons that are guiding them," Giuliani said.

To address a rise in gun violence, homelessness levels and other quality of life issues, Republicans say they'll add more police officers on the street to deter crime, cut other city workers to close the budget gap, and help the homeless.

When questioned repeatedly about their plans for the future, Giuliani and other Republicans talked about the past.

"And in two years, three years, we went from being the most dangerous city to the safest large city in America and we remained there until this idiot took over," Giuliani said, refering to de Blasio.

Crime is actually down 15% since de Blasio took office.

While Giuliani said he's not running for mayor, Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa is.

"Because Bill de Blasio doesn't know what to do," said Sliwa, who also attended the news conference. "If I'm lucky enough to become mayor, we double the number of street cops."

For his part, de Blasio calls Giuliani unhinged. The former mayor says that's a badge of honor.
