'Grannies Respond' Activists Head To Texas To Protest Family Separations

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The separation of children from their families at the Mexican border has inspired some two dozen senior citizens to react.

As WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported, the group Grannies Respond is traveling to Texas to express their outrage.

The gray-haired activists are taking a six-day road trip to McAllen, Texas. For Kathleen Mellen, 65, this is a matter of conscience.

“I’ve always really wondered, you know, when I learned about the Holocaust, when I learned about slavery as a child, would I have stood up? Would I have been one of those people?” she said. “And I never had an answer to that until maybe now.”

As a grandmother of two, Mellen said separating children from their families is unimaginable.

“I think it’s been shown that a lot of public pressure gets the administration to react,” she said.

Mellen admitted she was nervous, but feels she has to act.
