Hundreds Of Flights Canceled At Area Airports As Nor'easter Sweeps Through

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- While flights were still arriving and departing Wednesday, numerous flights were canceled at the three major airports as a nor’easter slammed the area.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, John F. Kennedy International Airport reported 529 cancellations – amounting to nearly 60 percent of all flights for the day canceled up until midnight.

LaGuardia Airport reported 60 percent of flights for the day were  canceled, and also reported that all activity at Terminal A has concluded for the day – including all JetBlue and Alaska Airlines flights.

While flights continued arriving and departing with minimal delays at LaGuardia and JFK, flight activity at Newark was canceled altogether at Newark Liberty International Airport for a period of time Wednesday afternoon. More than 50 percent of flights at Newark were also canceled.

By 3:15 p.m., departures and arrivals had resumed at Newark on one runway with additional delays.

Despite the widespread cancellations, all three airports reported minimal delays with scheduled arriving and departing flights as of early Wednesday afternoon.

Travelers are urged to contact their carriers before heading to the airport. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is also prepared to partner with airlines and terminal operators in case anyone is stranded at airports and needs to be accommodated.

All the airports are stocked with supplies such as cots, blankets, diapers, and baby formula for anyone who becomes stranded.
