NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Hundreds of New Yorkers are celebrating the life of Martin Luther King Jr. on this day of service by helping others on Long Island.

On their day off from school and work, hundreds of children, teenagers and adults got up bright and early and brought bags of fresh fruits and vegetables like oranges to the Mid-Island Y JCC in Plainview to donate and pack up food for those in need, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

"Let's remember this are not always people that are jobless," said Rick Lewis, CEO of the center. "These are sometimes people -- two working parent families that are just struggling to make it to the end of the month because Long Island is a very expensive place to live."

Brooke Selmer, 11, brought apples and told Hall, "It makes me feel sorry for them because I know I have it and they don't."

In addition to donating and bringing the food, volunteers will pack it up and bring the food to shelters around the area.
