MERRICK, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Nassau County Police came to the rescue of a dog that fell into a creek on Thursday.

The department's Marine Bureau responded to a call at 10:20 p.m. for a Jack Russel Terrier that was in the water at Cedar Swamp Creek in Merrick.

When police arrived, they found the dog against a bulkhead trying to stay above water by clinging to a crossbeam.

Officers were able to get him out of the water and safely onto their boat.

They brought the dog, named Eddie, back to shore where he was reunited with his owner.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran praised the officers on Twitter.

One officer was treated for puncture wounds on both hands sustained during the rescue.
