NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — New York City's top cop is heading to Visa.

The credit card company announced Tuesday that James O'Neill will serve as Senior Vice President and Global Head of Physical Security, starting Dec. 2.

In a statement, the company said O'Neill "will be responsible for the development, implementation and day-to-day operations of Visa’s global physical and personnel security and associated programs to ensure that the company’s employees and assets are protected in the 200+ countries in which Visa operates."

O'Neill announced on Monday that he is stepping down as NYPD commissioner after three years leading the department.

O'Neill started as a transit officer in 1983 and spent his entire career with the NYPD.

Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea, a 28-year NYPD veteran, will take over as commissioner.
