NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden would choose Michelle Obama as his running mate if the former first lady were interested in the job, he said.

In an interview with CBS Pittsburgh, the former vice president said he would pick Obama “in a heartbeat,” but added he “[didn’t] think she has any desire to live near the White House again."

“She’s brilliant. She knows the way around. She is a really fine woman. The Obamas are great friends,” Biden said.

Biden’s team, however, is “just beginning the process” of selecting a running mate, he noted.

While Biden has committed to picking a woman for the position, he didn’t commit to choosing a woman of color — but didn’t rule it out either.

“I’ll commit to [my running mate being] a woman because it is very important that my administration look like the public, look like the nation,” he told the station. “And there will be, committed that there will be a woman of color on the Supreme Court, that doesn’t mean there won’t be a vice president, as well.”

Former President Barack Obama last week announced he would endorse Biden in the presidential election, after holding off on an endorsement during the primaries.
