NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The Social Security Administration on Thursday released the list of the most popular names for babies born in New York state in 2017.

For boys, Liam was at the top of the list, followed by Noah, Jacob, Lucas, and Joseph. For girls, it was Olivia at the top, followed by Emma, Sophia, Mia, and Ava.

The average American is likely to know a 5-year-old boy, an 85-year-old man, and someone of every age in between named Michael. But as to the most popular New York baby names, Michael is not on the list this year.

“It’s very surprising, but Michael has moved off the list after being in the top five for many years,” said Everett Lowe of the Social Security Administration.

As to overall trends, not much has changed in recent years.

“Nationally, we’re seeing an increase in the name Melania, but in New York, with the exception of Michael, the names have really changed around, but it’s still the same top five for a couple of years now,” Lowe said.

Liam was also the top baby name nationally for boys born in 2017, followed by Noah, William, James, and Logan. For girls, Emma was at the top nationally, followed by Olivia, Ava, Isabella, and Sophia.
