NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- There will be a light and music show at 8 p.m. Wednesday night to celebrate the opening of the second span on the Kosciuszko Bridge.

Traffic will start flowing on the new span at 5 a.m. Thursday, but it's opening early to bike riders and pedestrians, who can enjoy the new bridge between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo expects an easier ride.

"It's estimated that this bridge will reduce traffic delays by 65 percent and for people who use this bridge that is a very big deal," said Cuomo.

Four lanes of traffic will flow unimpeded to Brooklyn and five lanes toward Queens on the new $873 million bridge. There will be breakdown lanes and a 20-foot wide pedestrian and bike path.

The old bridge had six lanes of traffic.

On Wednesday, Cuomo drove up in FDR's 1932 Packard to cut the ribbon and thank the unionized workers.

"To the 11,000 womena nd men who worked day and night, Saturday and Sunday to bring this project in four years ahead of schedule — have you ever heard of that? — thank you and God bless you," Cuomo said.

The project was completed on budget and four years ahead of schedule.

It's the first new bridge in the city since the Verrazzano Bridge opened in 1964.

Cuomo also announced this week that seven acres beneath the bridge will be transformed into a park known as "Under the K."
