LINDENHURST, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- There are 39 vacant lots by the water in Lindenhurst where beautiful, large homes once stood until Superstorm Sandy hit in the fall of 2012.

Now, those homes are gone and in their place remain barren eyesores that easily become flooded.

For years now, Joanne has had to look at the empty pieces of property near her home, including one right next door on Bayview Avenue.

Now because of a new program, residents can purchase the properties next to their homes.

They cannot build on them, but they can add bulkheads to prevent flooding or spruce the lots up with landscaping.

Joanne plans to put a rock structure for her plants and flowers on the property she plans to purchase.

"It's very exciting because I'm buying half of that property," she said. "If you look at my property you would see it's very small, so now it's going to be very big."

The money from the sale of the properties will go to the village.
